Today was a bit tense, not because of work but because the week's tax bill arrived in this morning's post and, much to our dismay, we saw that we didn't have enough money to cover it. At least there wasn't enough this morning. We have a couple of days after the bill arrives but we prefer to mail in our payment as soon as we possibly can. This of course prevents us from getting a visit from a town hall official who is there to seize enough of our belongings to cover the bill, plus we want to build up a good reputation as people who are responsible and cover our expenses.

Neldor was off work today but after finishing up the barnyard chores he went into town with his guitar, set himself up on a corner and played for tips in the falling snow. I was on the guild schedule today but I didn't think the day's wages would be quite enough to cover the tax bill (again, this is the disadvantage to having a large home on a big piece of property. We have more so we owe more).

At the end of my shift, which is currently two o'clock in the afternoon, I headed home and wished that I had some finished paintings to take to the consignment shop, or better yet more alchemy ingredients to make a dozen or so useful potions to sell. Unfortunately reagents are scarce and more expensive during this time of year.

Note: I am absolutely going to plant a garden in the spring and grow an assortment of fruit, vegetables, and alchemy ingredients.

Trying not to worry, I sat down at our tea table in the living room and sipped my tea while waiting for Neldor to come home. To my relief, when he arrived I saw him placing the tax payment inside our mailbox before coming inside the house.

When Neldor sat down at the table, I asked as Casper sprawled on the floor nearby and chewed one of his toys, "Are we broke?"

Pouring a cup of tea for himself, he answered cheerfully, "Not quite. We still have one hundred and fifty septims to our name. We'll just have to tighten our belts while we build our savings back up."

Following a sigh of relief, I said, "I hope we can do that before the next bill is due."

Neldor assured me, "We will. I'll be making a little more now that I went up a rank at the guild." He drank a sip of tea before saying, "I wasn't sure that playing for tips would bring enough, but while I was there the tallest Dunmer I have ever seen - I mean, he was easily as tall as an Altmer - stopped for a while to listen to me. Before he left he gave me an extremely generous donation and thanked me for providing such 'beautiful music'. I guess he was impressed."

"Ancestors bless him, whoever he is," I replied.

And so for now everything is paid. I have the next three days off from work and I'll spend them working on some paintings for the consignment shop. If they sell that will hopefully earn us enough to build our savings back up.

One thing we will never do is resort to stealing, unlike a certain other Bosmer who was in the news yet again. Yanna made another attempt to rob Merry Widow Manor and this second attempt didn't go any better for her than the first one;

"I asked Yann in no uncertain terms, officer, to put my antique curtains back where she found them and step away," stated Andralia of Firsthold. "But no, she kept insisting they belonged to her now. The poor girl must have a mental affliction, so I'm not pressing charges...this time."

Hmmm...bad idea not pressing charges. Yanna doesn't seem like the sort who will learn her lesson. The only way to keep her out of other people's homes is to lock her up. If she ever tries to rob our home Yanna will find that neither Neldor or I will be so forgiving.
